Dentures and Partials

Dentures are extractable appliances built to replace missing teeth and gum tissues. The dentists at Houston Medical Center Dental are experienced in developing both full and partial dentures for their patients. Patients who have all or most of their teeth may be candidates for full dentures, while those who want to replace a few teeth may require partial dentures.

Patients who need full dentures can choose between “conventional” or “immediate” dentures. Once the dentist has removed the teeth, the patient must wait two to three months for the gum tissue to heal. The patient will then be ready for conventional dentures that will fit well in the mouth. Patients who choose “immediate” dentures can get fitted for dentures right away. However, the healing process can make the gums and jawbones change shape, so immediate dentures require further adjustments.

Partial dentures are removable appliances which typically contain replacement teeth connected to plastic bases colored to match the patient’s gums. The base is connected to the teeth by a metal framework. Partial dentures latch onto the patient’s natural teeth with metallic clasps or precision attachments. Precision attachments are nearly invisible to the observer, which makes them a more preferable option than the traditional clasps.

The professional staff at Houston Medical Center Dental can consult with patients who may be considering dentures. While plastic dentures have been used as tooth replacements for decades, they do carry several disadvantages. Dentures are not a permanent solution, as the patient must go in for readjustment every few years. Dentures can also alter how the patient looks, speaks and eats and are prone to lock or slip at inopportune times. Patients may opt for the more stable and permanent dental implants in place of removable dentures.
